How to Meditate

People look towards meditation for many reasons. If you're looking how to meditate yourself, then you will almost certainly have your own reasons. Some people want to feel their inner strength, where as other people want to find their calmer more peaceful side.

So the first thing you must do is find somewhere quiet that you can start your meditation in. This can be a room in the house that isn't used often, or if you are alone then any room will suffice, as long as it is away from any noise including cars, or people passing by.

Next, you will learn how to relax. Sounds simple doesn't it? But actually it is more than just sitting down and doing nothing. One way is to concentrate on certain parts of your body and relax them in turn. Once you've done this with all your body parts, you should feel a huge sense of relaxation.

You will then learn how to control your breathing. You will initially start taking a long inhale of air and exhale it much slower and calmer. This will slow down your natural breathing process to make you feel more calmer. You should ideally try to shut out any outside noise or thoughts that you may have a concentrate on one thing only. This could be a place that you've always dreamed of visiting or simply someone you like. Just focus on them and nothing else.

You should then try and remain in this state for as long as you can. Once you are finished you should feel a lot more calmer than you did before commencing the meditation.

This is obviously just a basic way to meditate and there are a lot more different ways that simply wouldn't fit into this article. The most popular method however, once you've mastered the basics is to assume the lotus position. This is where you sit with your legs crossed and place your hands, palm face up on your knees. You then relax your whole body and start your breathing exercises.

Concentrating on your breathing is one of the most important things to master when learning how to meditate. Once you do this, you'll quickly be able to get into a more relaxed and calm sense of state. This will really help you combat any troubles or worries that the real world is throwing at you.
