Hunting big boar is a difficult process. A lot of factors need to be considered, such as the type of gun, caliber, as well as the load. In essence, it is imperative that the load match the hunting style.
Tools/Material Required
- Hunting Rifle or pistol
- Binoculars
- Solar-powered lighting
- Tree stand
Odor And Sight
Make sure you do not have any body odor as it can be easily smelled by big boars. They have a keen sense of smell and sight, contrary to what people say. They can see quite well, so do not make any sudden noises.
Locating The Boar
There are certain specific signs that a boar leaves behind, and locating these can help you identify the usual hideouts of the boar. Wallows and rubs are some of the most common markers.
Hunting The Pasture
After you have identified the regular haunts of the boar, sit inside the tree stand and look through your binoculars. It is best to hunt during the nighttime as that is when boars are most active.
Looking For Boars
You can use your binoculars in conjunction with a laser light to locate the boar easily. You can use a scope with the light attached or clipped on to it. This will free up your hands so that you don't need to hold on to the light while using it.
Using Solar-Powered Lights
Solar-powered lights are great for night hunting. The lights come up at dark and remain on for the entire night, which is a great convenience.
Luring The Boar
Boars are notorious for running very quickly, especially at night. In such cases, locating them and getting a clear shot can be very difficult. That's why it is essential to lure the boar to a spot near your tree stand. You could try sprinkling some corn on its trail. This way the boar may stop at one place.
Turning On The Light
Contrary to what people say, turning on the light when the boar is eating will not scare it away. It will just stop eating for sometime. That is the best time to shoot, as the boar is quite still at that time.
Hearing The Noise
Boars are known to be noisy when they eat. This can be advantageous when you are trying to get a good shot. While sitting in your tree stand, listen carefully for the noise of the boar eating corn. That way you can aim better at the direction of the sound.
Where To Shoot
There are certain select places that are more likely to injure the boar seriously enough that it won't be able to run away. Places like the shoulder or the neck make great targets. Shooting at the leg can result in the boar limping away. It can then be very difficult to track down!
