How To Prevent Leakage In Radiators
Pinholes can develop in radiators that lead to leakage. The cause is usually corrosion due to excessive air or mud that might have entered the system. It is this air that further promotes corrosion. The only satisfactory solution in this situation is to replace the radiator with a new one. However, one has to decide if the entire system has to be flushed or if it is the interference of air in the system that is causing the problem.
If the root cause of the problem is not known, you will have to replace radiators at regular intervals. However, there are various methods available that help prevent leakage in radiators.

Overheating is one problem that might be due to radiator leaks as the cooling system might have failed because of insufficient coolant in the system. This radiator leak can therefore be prevented while on a journey by taking a few precautions:
- A routine inspection is mandatory before using the car. When the engine is cold enough, its coolant level should always lie between "MIN," or minimum, and "MAX," or maximum range.
- Loose connections as well as damage and cracks on radiator hoses should be identified. Lower and upper radiator hoses should be checked for any improper attachment. Crack on radiator core, reservoir tank, and radiator tank should also be verified for strength.
- One can then proceed to clean the radiator and prevent leaks. While maintenance on the radiator is performed, the radiator may or may not be removed from the vehicle.
- While cleaning the radiator, it is better to avoid bending or damaging the radiator fins. One can use the water hose spray at the back of the car radiator by putting it vertically downward.
- Core surfaces of the radiator can be sprayed vertically downward with the help of the water hose once every minute until the stain has been removed from flowing out of the radiator core.
- When no more stain is noticed flowing out, the backside of the radiator core should be sprayed with compressed air vertically downward. A pressure of 71 psi should not be exceeded. The spray nozzle should be at a distance of at least 1 foot and should also be positioned above the core of the radiator.
- The radiator core surface can be sprayed in a vertically downward direction once every minute until no sprays of water on radiator core.
Tips and Warnings
It is always advisable to check the coolant level of the vehicle so that leaks do not occur when driving. If the coolant of the engine is found to decrease rapidly after every inspection, there may be a leak somewhere inside the cooling system. The vehicle should be taken to a good shop to check for leakage. Raw egg or black pepper can also be put in the radiator to stop the leakage.
