How to Draw Animals

Materials to Use for Drawing Animals

Pencil - Use a comfortable pencil.

Paper - If this is the first time you are drawing animals, it is advisable to prepare a thick pad of paper that you can use if you make mistakes. You will need much practice before you can draw perfectly.

Photos - Select pictures of animals that you would like to draw.

Basic Steps

  1. When starting to draw, always use a pencil rather than a pen so that you can erase mistakes.
  2. Pictures or photos of animals that you want to draw are important tools. If you are new to drawing animals, you should choose large pictures that clearly show fine details.
  3. You should choose pictures that can be easily copied. However, give free reign to your creative imagination. You can customize your picture by adding or editing details.
  4. You should draw from the basic parts. Draw a rough schematic representation of the animal first. You can do this by starting with basic shapes such as circles for heads or elliptical disks for paws. Cylindrical shapes can also be used as legs or arms.
  5. Fill in the desired details for your drawing such as the eyes, mouth, nose, etc., and shading for the fur.
  6. Now, get the Point of View. The Point of View, or angle of view, is the disappearing point or the horizon. It will help you characterize the shape of your animal, though this might cause your drawing to appear a bit cartoonish.
  7. For more realism in your drawing, add the details from the photo of the animal that you have chosen. You can also use a drawing book to copy specific details, including the basic anatomical structures of the animals.
  8. After achieving a certain level of drawing skill, you can try your hand at charcoals, oil pastels, or fine pens.
