How to Build a Shed
If you have never experienced building a shed, this may seem like an overwhelming project. The strong sturdy base of the shed is the most important, once that is up and running, everything else should be easier. Building the base can be difficult for a single person to complete. I would recommend having someone help to build the base.
If building in your backyard or personal property, there should be no need for any permits or licenses of any kind.
Planning
- Select a clear area for the place you would like to build your shed in.
- Natural light is a must if you intend to work in your shed, off and on, at day/evening hours.
- You will need a power source if you will be running any sort of electricity.
It would be best to place your shed on a flat concrete surface pad. If you cannot build a concrete pad, make sure the earth's surface where the shed will be placed has been leveled. If not properly leveled, the shed will be uneven or lopsided.

Wood is the most common element to use when building a shed. When buying the wood, you should check for knots, dents and warps, as these things will not be good for your shed.

- When building a shed, think of a box, this is essentially what a shed is; just a four sided box with a peaked top.
- Once the choosing of the lumber and the laying of the base surface down is complete, here comes the easy part.
- A simple shed can take the shape of a lean-to with one large slanted wall nailed to three smaller walls on the side.
- If you feel confident in your building skills, then a more complicated shed would be a four-sided rectangular shed with a pitched roof.
- To attach the roof, nail the slanted slabs of wood to the upright walls.
- To finish the project, apply a preservative treatment and any insulation or electric wiring that is needed.
