How to Build a Closet
A closet is a private room that can be used for various purposes. Either it can be used for keeping chinaware and other kitchen utensils, or it can be used as a small private cabinet for storing clothes. It can also be used as a chamber for studying.
Building a closet is a very essential matter, which needs a lot of consideration while one is planning to build a house. First you need to consider the space you want to allot to a closet. The size of the rooms will also decide the space you can allot to the closet in your house.
A closet should be properly framed, as it is an asset of the house. You can have wardrobes for holding clothes, or hanging the coats and umbrellas. Wherever you choose to build a closet and whatever the purpose you choose it for, make sure it is given ample space for the purpose it is assigned. Make sure your closet has windows too, but not as big as in other rooms. The windows should let enough air inside so that the closet doesn't become a suffocating chamber.
For building a closet, one first needs to choose a doorframe, as the size of the door will decide the size of the closet. Then calculate the inside perimeter, keeping apart the length of the baseboards and moldings. Keep in mind the thickness of wall while taking these measurements.
Measure the outer perimeter of the closet; keep in mind that you have to add four inches to width and length taken for the inner perimeter.
Construct a frame of the closet. For the frame you can choose any material you feel like. You can have a wooden frame or a metal frame. The closet frame should be fixed properly in the wall, roof and floors with the help of nails. A closet should be strongly built, as it will act as a storehouse for you. Make sure that the frame has been fixed properly before it is nailed. One must make sure that the corners are stuffed properly, if somehow there are crevices left in between the frame of the closet and the wall.
Now comes the shelving process. The shelving process is the most important part of a closet building plan. Divisions and partitions of a closet decide its efficiency and use. If shelving is not done properly then it will end up becoming a mess altogether. Storage of items will largely depend upon the partitions and shelving of the closet.
In a coat closet you should have ample space to keep other things as well like, gloves, sweat shirts, scarves and umbrellas. People mostly prefer closets with wire baskets because they allow easy storage. If you have a scarcity of space then you can have a wire basket shelving in your house. It is a good option for those who are renting a house. In a rented house, you cannot make much change and so you need to adjust according to space allotted.
A shoe closet is the place that is regularly accessed by the members of the house. Try to have a shoe closet near the main entrance door; having an in-wall shoe closet can do this. In-wall shoe closet is a good option as it facilitates the accessibility as well as keeps it hidden. However, if your house is rented then mobile closet is a preferable option.
